Our solution to these problems is to adopt the AppImage packaging format, which allows us to distribute a portable version of OpenRA that should work on most modern Linux distributions. Another long-standing issue on many distros is the (lack of) support for installing playtests and releases at the same time, as players are able to on Windows and macOS. This has worked well in most respects, but sometimes delays in updates would strand players on older versions, stopping them from playing online. For many years we have automatically generated a deb package, but then relied on downstream packages for other distributions. One big change affects how we package and distribute our “official” OpenRA builds on Linux.
We hope to ship these plus many other changes in a new playtest series starting in a few weeks. I wanted to write something to bridge the news gap until our next official news post, so here’s a brief update on a couple of recent projects. Surprisingly it works fine, no noticeable difference between it on a Pi3 and Win/Lin, it helps to increase GPU mem to 128MB.Ī Pi3 is very close to being a desktop replacement now for me as I really only play Warzone2100 these days on spare box as the kid has grabbed my game PC
Installed Warzone2100 3.1.1 and it just worked Upgraded everything and enabled OpenGL on a heatsinked Pi3.įound out there is now "add software" in the menu, guess what, lot of stuff now including games.
